The RE Pupil Voice group are very pleased to announce that we have been judged at Gold Standard in our Religious Education Quality Mark. This acknowledges excellent, creative and innovative RE practice throughout the school and for recognition as outstanding in the wider community.
Dereham Junior Academy held their first Art Exhibition on Thursday. It went so well that we hope to open it up to the wider school community next year. Here are some photos of the amazing work produced by children across the school.
As part of their topic ‘Space Invaders’, Year 5 investigated air resistance and how astronauts get safely back to the Earth. We made our own egg-stronauts and kept 6 out of 7 alive!
Last week, a joint project was held between Church Infant School, Grove House Infant School, Kings Park Infant School and Dereham Junior School to help prepare the Year 2s for their transition to us. To begin with, all students (over 200 in total) went to see the new Aladdin film. Amazingly, this was free to students thanks to the support of Dereham Cinema and the Friends of Dereham Junior School. Later in the week, Year 2 students enjoyed a range of activities with Year 3 students returning to their infant schools and Year 2s coming to the Junior School. Everyone seemed to have a great time and it was lovely getting to know everyone. The children’s favourite activity involved them ‘traveling’ on a magic carpet with a little help from green screen and drawings created by the students.
As part of their Topic, ‘Space Invaders’, Year 5 have been learning about the phases of the moon with the aide of Oreo cookies.
Year 3 ended Greek Week on a high by enjoying a Greek feast of olives, pitta bread, humous, Tzatziki, olive oil, feta cheese, grape juice and Greek yogurt with honey.
Year 3 exploded their way into their new volcano topic by making one out of sand and then mixing washing up liquid, food colouring, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar so that it erupted. As you can tell by the faces it was a great afternoon.
Year 3 have been making their own 3D shapes out of marshmallows and spaghetti to help secure their knowledge of faces, edges and vertices.
The whole school participated in a ‘Big Art Day’ on Tuesday. We worked in our houses within our year groups to create some amazing pieces to form an Art Gallery within school. The theme for the artwork was based on the houses: Air, Earth, Water and Fire.
Year 5 started their ‘Space Invaders’ topic with a visit from the Planetarium. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it has ignited our passion for space.
