Attendance and Illness

Pupil Attendance

As a school we work hard to make sure our pupils are in school as much as possible to enable them to enjoy a full and happy education and to reach their full potential.

If your child misses a period of time out of school they may:

  • Struggle to keep up with the school work when they return
  • Miss out on the social side of school life – especially at primary level.

The following are the only exceptions for not attending school:

  • Illness
  • Medical visits (which cannot be arranged out of school time i.e. hospital appointments)
  • Exceptional circumstances (i.e. a funeral)
  • Religious observance

Reporting Absence

If your child is not well enough to send to school please let us know as soon as possible on the day of absence by either sending a text using the My Ed application or telephoning 01362 693876 where you can leave a voice message at any-time during the day.  If you are unsure whether to send your child to school please either refer to Fit for School Information by accessing here or contact attendance via school office where staff will be able to reassure you of any worries that you may have.

If your child is going to be absent during term time for any other reason than illness please complete An application for pupil leave of absence from school during term time in advance.

Your application will be considered and if it meets the correct criteria your child will be given an authorised absence.  When submitting applications for medical appointments please attach a copy of the appointment letter/card; or pop into the office if you have the details in text form on your mobile.

Head teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. No holidays will be authorised.  If you apply for a leave of absence for a holiday which is not agreed by the school and you still choose to take your child on holiday during term time you could be subject to a fixed penalty fee of £60 per child per parent.

Lateness

Being late for school reduces learning time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day they will miss three days of learning each year.  If your child is 15 minutes late every day they will miss 2 weeks of learning each year.  Please ensure that your child arrives on time each and every school day.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school attendance officer via the school office if you have any questions or require any further assistance concerning any form of attendance matter.
