Mathematics is a National Curriculum core subject, categorised into four attainment targets:
- Using and applying Mathematics
- Number
- Shape, Space and Measures
- Handling Data
Opportunities for using and applying Mathematics exist throughout the other three main attainment targets.
Mathematics lessons will normally include: oral mental work, a main activity and a plenary following the guidance contained in The National Numeracy Framework unit plans.
Mental arithmetic is a key feature, with children being taught a range of strategies to work out answers and being expected to quickly recall simple mathematical facts.
